Barking was a local government district in south west Essex from 1894 to 1965 around the town of Barking.

It was created as Barking Town urban district in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 and gained the status of as the municipal borough of Barking in 1931.

The borough ran its own tram services until they became the responsibility of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933.

In 1965 the municipal borough was abolished by the London Government Act 1963 and its area transferred to Greater London from Essex. Its former area was combined with parts of other districts to form the present-day London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and a small part of the borough west of the River Roding became part of the London Borough of Newham.
