[edit] Controversies

McCarthy is known for his controversial challenge of the view that there was an Armenian Genocide.<ref name="PBS">"A PBS Documentary Makes Its Case for the Armenian Genocide, With or Without a Debate", The New York Times, April 17, 2006. Retrieved on 2006-09-02.</ref>

He was also one of four scholars who participated in a debate hosted by PBS over the veracity of the genocide. Television critic Alessandra Stanley of The New York Times commented on McCarthy's condescending behavior during the program and the ease at which his arguments were countered by humanities professor Peter Balakian and Ottoman historian Taner Akçam.<ref name="PBS" />
