Gotham (gŏth´əm) is a a town in Nottinghamshire, England. It is also a sobriquet for New York City first used by Washington Irving in the Salmagundi Papers (1807), as a satirical reference to the tales of the "Wise fools of Gotham" told about the English town.<ref name="ce">“Gotham” The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. New York: Columbia University Press, 2001–04. Accessed on 2006-10-22.</ref> The nickname was later appropriated by Bob Kane for Gotham City in his Batman series of comic books.<ref name="ce" />
