"Karate Island" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season four.
Brief summary: SpongeBob receives an invitation to take part in a competition on mysterious Karate Island for the chance to be crowned the "King of Karate."
Time/Date: Unknown
Time cards shown: None
Main Character(s):
Major Character(s):
- Three Karate Fighters
- The Tickler
- Lip Service
- Filthy Phil
Minor Character(s):
After receiving an invitation for Karate Island, SpongeBob arrives on Karate Island, along with Sandy. There he meets the Master Udon, who uses three fake Karate masters who fake getting beaten up by SpongeBob. Sandy starts to believe something fishy is going on, as SpongeBob is dubbed King of Karate and given the throne. After a small conversation with SpongeBob, Sandy leaves in anger. Seconds later, SpongeBob's throne traps him where he's sitting, and Udon brings out a pen.
Hearing SpongeBob's cries, Sandy shrugs and decides that SpongeBob should get himself out of his own mess; but then when SpongeBob cries again, calling for her, Sandy comes to his aid.
Now, SpongeBob is in Karate Tower, and Sandy runs inside (dressed like Beatrix Kiddo, the Bride, from Kill Bill). She faces the three perils of the tower: The Tickler, the one that tickles (his weakness is jelly-filled doughnuts), Lip Service, the one that has huge lips, and Filthy Phil, the one that unleashes odor (he falls due to his own odor; Sandy is not affected due to her fresh air dome/helmet). The tower is also a direct reference to Game of Death. After that, Sandy finds SpongeBob and Udon. He traps Sandy in a cage, and reveals he is a real estate agent, selling timeshares. Sandy performs a meditation ritual, and breaks free of the cage.
She rips off her jumpsuit, revealing her bikini underneath; Sandy and Udon suddenly turn extremely buff (then are back to normal again, immediately) and fight. Sandy wins after a lot of fighting, and knocks Udon out of the tower and he falls off the island. Sandy frees SpongeBob, and they go to the boat. SpongeBob is disappointed that he is not the King, but Sandy consoles him by saying that he'll always be the King of Karate to her.
Squidward appears in his own boat. Apparently, he got a similar invitation, except it says King of Clarinets, not King of Karate. He arrives at Clarinet Island, where he is now dubbed King of Clarinets. The episode ends showing a close-up of the apparently still-alive Master Udon standing on one of the poles shown when SpongeBob arrived at Karate Island.
The episode ends in a dedication to Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (1932-2005), also known as Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid series, who died on November 24, 2005.
[edit] In Popular Culture
- The episode contains several allusions to the Kill Bill films, directed by Quentin Tarantino [citation needed].
- Sandy's jumpsuit matches exactly the one that Uma Thurman was wearing in Kill Bill. However, the original jumpsuit and the entire idea of facing opponents on different levels of a tower are direct references to Bruce Lee in Game of Death.
- The painting of a boat inside Gary's shell is a replica of the painting over The Simpson family's couch.
- Sandy breaking out of Udon's cage using hand symbols is a reference to Naruto.
[edit] Trivia
- This episode is in memory of Pat Morita. Even so, the title card at the end notes him as a Special Guest Voice, because he voiced Master Udon before he died.
- This is the second time in which the inside of Gary's shell is seen, first being in "Have You Seen This Snail?".
- This is one of the 9 episodes in which the title card has an animation. The others were "SB-129", "Idiot Box", "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler", "Pre-Hibernation Week", "Ghost Host", "All That Glitters, One Krab's Trash (if looked at carefully), and Skill Crane".
- Udon means "noodle" in Japanese.
- The first person that Sandy fought used as his special technique metal hands that were for tickling. He was also dressed in a beret and black and white striped shirt; the stereotypical costume for a Frenchman. Thus (in an adult way) this character could be thought of as a french tickler.
- When Spongebob is watching the Karate Island Video, the Title sequence appears again.
- When Spongebob and Sandy is leaving Condo Island, Sandy wears her helmet, but not her suit.
- When this episode aired in The Best Day Ever marathon, the title card at the end that says "In memory of Pat Morita" was removed for reasons unknown.
- The fish that rings the gong (Fred) has appeared as a minor/background character in many other episodes. He was one of the flag twirlers that got killed in Squidward's band in Band Geeks. He suggested that he and Tom eat at the Shell Shack in Patty Hype. He offered Mr. Krabs 1 million dollars for Smitty Werben Jegger Man Jenson's soda drinking hat in One Krab's Trash. He also appears in the episode that follows this one, All That Glitters, where he sells Spongebob Le Spatula.
- During the fight scene with Sandy and Udon, Sandy knocks out Udon's teeth. Later when Udon falls off the tower, he still has his teeth
- Garys shell is smaller than Spongebob, however Spongebob can fit inside easily when he go's in to clean it up
